NEW HBC Pirates Tag Module Surges 700 plus Registered Players in First Full Season

What began in 2024 as a small alternative representative tag pathways initiative has rapidly transformed into one of the fastest-growing community sports movements in the Hibiscus Coast Rodney Region. The club launched its own full tag module at Victor Eves Park in Ōrewa, amassing just under 700 registered players in its debut year.

Led by Shelvin Swamy and a passionate, family-driven committee, the HBC Pirates have built their programme on three core pillars: community, positivity, and whānau-focused fun. The club’s philosophy is simple, create a welcoming environment where children, teens, and adults can fall in love with the sport of tag, build friendships, and feel proud to represent their community.

“What we are seeing is an explosion of interest in tag from local families,” said the Pirates leadership team. “Our goal has always been to get as many people as possible active, smiling, and involved. To see nearly 700 players already wearing the Pirates colours is humbling and incredibly exciting for our region.”

The Pirates’ module offers opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels, from beginners taking the field for the first time to competitive athletes chasing higher honours. The club has quickly become known for its vibrant game days, professional approach, and emphasis on positive vibes, inclusion, and giving back.

“We’re not just a sports club, we’re a community hub,” the club added. “We’re about families connecting, kids gaining confidence, and creating a place where everyone feels they belong.”

The Hibiscus Coast Pirates represent the entire Hibiscus Coast and Rodney district, with a mission to make tag accessible to as many families as possible. With strong volunteer support and rapidly growing demand, the club is already exploring ways to expand opportunities, field more teams, and continue delivering value to local schools, clubs, and families.

For families wanting to experience the energy of Pirates tag, registrations, events, and updates can be found on the club’s official social platforms.
